the old new harbor lighthouse

New Harbor, Maine is home to the Pemaquid Point Lighthouse – which you might recognize from the official Maine quarter! Commissioned in 1827 by President John Quincy Adams, the lighthouse is a local favorite. Neighbored by The Seagull Gift Shop and Oceanfront Restaurant (open seasonally), and lots of cute, coastal homes – we would definitely recommend taking the time to visit!

In the summer months, the lighthouse is open to the public for a small fee and holds the Fishermen’s Museum at Pemaquid. It’s been fun diving into the history of Maine and fishing and sea culture – but we still have a lot to learn! I picked up The Foundation of New England by James Truslow Adams from an antique store in Wiscassett, and I’m excited to start reading it. Adams – of no relation to the presidents – was the man who coined the term “The American Dream” – you can read more about him here.

The lighthouse sits atop a great rocky shoreline, made of metamorphic and igneous rocks. My seventh grade geology teacher would be proud of me for that one, but I will admit I looked up how the different kinds of rock occur. I had a great time climbing all around, but there were signs to be careful in stormy weather – I’m sure the waves and wind make the area very dangerous in harsh conditions!

I love wearing my Sperry duck boots in New England – though they’re not the original L.L. Bean boots that I probably should be wearing. At the antique store in Wiscasset I also picked up an old copy of Guaranteed to Last which is a history of L.L. Bean. Leon Leonwood Bean invented the duck boots to go hunting here in Maine, because he couldn’t find the perfect shoe that had both grip and the ability to keep his feet dry. Now a billion dollar business, L.L. Bean still calls Freeport, Maine home, and is on our list of places we want to visit.

All in all, we had a great little trip up the coast. I’ve loved living in Maine so far, and getting out and exploring has been a big blessing. I’m really grateful that we’re able to live here in Maine and that we get to visit so many cool places. God has definitely been good to us and all our praise goes to Him!

Talk to you soon,

Adriana
